Restoring T42 HDD

Hey guys!

I have a few questions on the hard drive that is confusing me right now. I'm trying to find a way to restore my 80GB 7200RPM hard drive in my T42 back to it's original state. I have all of the files and folders, but don't have the tools on the seperate partition like one of my other T40's did.

I don't have the IBM logo under the system properties, and my Access IBM feature is completely messed up.

Is it possible to restore this T42 back to it's original state from when it shipped from IBM with what I have? Thanks guys!

(By the way, the T42 came with an XP Pro SP2 disc, all IBMTOOLS folders and other files.)

Sound like you'll need the recovery discs.

You can probably use the XP disk you have to reinstall the OS then get all your lenovo software via system updater.

How many CD's came with the machine?

Just one. Seems the owner had burned the disc though.

By using the "Lenovo" updater, it installs the updates and whatnot, but it seems to mess things up more than when all the IBM software was originally on there.

I don't want to have to install all of the setup files over again if I reinstall Windows XP, but I definately didn't get any restore CD's.

It's a 2373-M3U.

In your other post, you are trying to get Vista running on the T42, are you now abandoning Vista and trying to restore XP?
If you reload XP from your copied cd, hopefully it is an oem copy and not retail or it will not accept the COA keycode.
You don't see the IBM logo because it is not a copy of an IBM oem disc.
If you get it loaded and manually install the needed drivers instead of the update method, it should run fine.
Your other option is to aquire the proper system restore cd set as Kyocera has suggested, which will rebuild the hidden partition if you start with an unallocated hd.

Exactly. I couldn't get the screen to stop flickering in Vista, so I went back to XP. I feared that the machine wouldn't be the same, and it's not. It was much better preloaded the way it was, with all of the IBM software, not Lenovo's.

It was a burned disc, so most likely a downloaded copy of XP Pro SP2.

I am looking to get those restore cd's, so I can get the partition back on the hard drive, so you're right. I didn't know if these were all supposed to come with restore cd's, or they had to be created like on all of the new HP/Compaq/Gateway/Acer machines.

How would I go about aquiring these discs?

I think Kyocera may have a set he can send you for a nominal cost, as well as other forum members, you can also place a wanted ad in the marketplace for T42 recovery cd's.
There is also someone in the marketplace that sells genuine new sets for $38

I just noticed how much worse the trackpoint system acts since I've updated everything on a fresh copy of XP. It's much worse than when I first got the notebook.

Plus, I never had the restore partition to start with. That's one thing I like for the diagnostics and other utilities.

May be a hardware issue, but worth reloading a known good driver and checking first. My T42's have zero trackpoint problems running W2k and XP (they are 2 and 3 years old). Also worth doing an XP install using the product recovery discs, to avoid possible conflicts and issues.
