usb flash drive not recognized immediately

#1 Post by Ogg » Sun May 11, 2008 12:47 pm

Whenever I plug in my usb flash/thumb drives, it takes about 30 seconds before XP opens up the little window with the various options. I can usually just use Explorer immediately and cancel the pop-up window that would normally appear 30 seconds later. But I was wondering if there is a fix to this delay.

Does it matter if the drive is empty or has files on it?

Depends what's on the flash drive and how big the files are. Windows needs to read/catagorize/display what's there, and depending on how you have your Autoplay setup, it's trying to determine what to do... so it's taking it's sweet time!

Why not just plug in the flash drive and set the Autoplay options so you don't have to wait for Windows to display the pop-up window. Set all Autoplay options to "Open Folders to view files using Windows Explorer" and you won't have to worry about it.
