Flip A Coin for me: Hitachi 5K160 160GB or WD Scorpio 160GB

Hey everyone, I've been fighting with this decision for 4 days straight, and I can't make up my mind...

So I will let you all choose, which drive who you pick for a T40p? The Hitachi 5K160 160GB or WD Scorpio 160GB, both PATA obviously.

They are both exactly the same price, similar specs, similar user reviews...

I only voted for the Hitachi because I recently put two into a T41 and a T42 and they are both working very well (quiet, cool).

I'd definately go for the WD. I've never had a single WD fail on me, in fact, my first 4 Mb (yes!) is still running fine without extra noise, bad sectors or whatever. I've had tons of Hitachi/IBM drives fail on me. Same for Quantum, Maxtor, Samsung. The worst drives ever (eventually all failed!) were Seagates..

But I'm sure people have different experiences.

All other things being equal I would go for the WD. WD has a much better (and faster) RMA process if your drive ever dies and you need to replace it. WD will cross ship your replacement whereas Hitachi will only ship the replacement after the bad harddrive is received by them.

I have never used a WD drive in my laptop(s), so I really should not be voting here ... FWIW, I have not had a single hitachi HDD fail on me, so my "invisble" vote is for the 5K160.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Well....it looks like my decision has been made for me, and regrettably not by you guys.

My e-tailer went from 28 5K160's in-stock on Friday to zero in-stock today, with no ETA for restocking.

So the Scorpio wins by default

It will be my first WD drive ever (although I'm buying a new WD SE16 640GB Speed Demon at the same time), hopefully it lasts longer than my pitiful Samsung HM100JC

You won't regret getting a WD, I haven't had a single bad experience with them which is more than I can say about Hitachi.

i voted 5K160 because i own one and have had great luck with it.   it's currently being used in a lenovo external USB HDD enclosure originally fitted with an 80GB drive.
