T40 Motherboard issue; clue is Green light on Rgt Side by CD

#1 Post by jcorbi82 » Sat May 17, 2008 9:53 am

hello Board! My T40 is "dead." The computer turns on... but frequently does nothing (it seems to fail POST.) I have ordered a Working Pull motherboard from a T41 or T40 from EBay.

What happens: The display does not even go to "IBM Thinkpad." Mine displays the 3-color "IBM Thinkpad" logo across before it boots to XP. Occasionally, it will... but i would always have to "tap" it, and then not move it any type of way, for it to stay... it would last for varying amounts of time before having double-and triple-fine lines around text, the display flickering on and off from black to display before freezing. It no longer does even this.

the Clue: I have noticed a Green light that -seems- to have the Monitor symbol by it, on the right-hand side, past the CD. It flickers on and off, at varying brightness strengths, when I "palm thrust" the front of the computer. I wonder if this is at all connected to the issue of the display, and computer freezing. (When display works, it worked perfect; also, the tech guy that took my motherboard apart said it was likelt the motherboard because display cable was fine, and it worked the same before and after disassembly, with this problem.)

I also want to replace my hard Drive, as it is not dead, only very used... I have the Fragmentation that Windows Defragmenter can't seem to fix, so i want to transfer my info to anew hard drive before the impending failure (so it seems) - my harddrive still botts and spins, i can hear it... i want it to be in my 'new' motherboard for only a little while.

So: Was my deduction of "motherboard" correct? <-- the tech guy sais this was his best guess too. perhaps I can outfit it with a B1 stepping 2GHz Dothan, 400MHz FSB and 1GB mem stick (up from my 512MB) to complete the upgrade?

Please post reply to let me know if the "Green Light" is telling me anything relevant to this situation!!! Thank You.
- IBM T40, 1.6GHz "Pentium M," Currently: Won't Boot - has issue, 512MB RAM, 40GB HD.

This sounds like the well known GPU issue in the T4* machines. There are some people that can reflow the solder to create a better connection for you. It is not an easy task. I just destroyed a board trying it, yet I am going to give it another shot...
