screen resolution comparison for T42s...

#1 Post by pointfielder » Mon Dec 13, 2004 3:18 pm

Hello All,
I am in the process of deciding on a screen resolution to buy
in my new T42 or T42p. There's plenty written here about the
pros and cons of 1600x1200 or 1400x1050 or 1024x768 on
14 and 15 inch screens.

Based on the suggestions here, I went to a few electronics stores
(circuit city, bestbuy and compusa) to check out the UXGA/SXGA/XGA
screens for myself to see what my eyes will be comfortable with.

To my surprise, more than 80% models on display at these stores were
WXGA (wide screen series) and the rest were XGA. The closest I could
get to 1600x1200 was on a WSXGA 17" screen with 1680x1050 resolution
and the comparison was certainly not ideal.

People have mentioned on this forum that they have been able to
see UXGA/SXGA resolution at some stores. Can you let me know which?

Also, can the people who have 1600x1200 and 1400x1050 resolution
screens share their experiences?

Thanks very much. 8)
Ravi

I love 1600x1200. It's VERY close to being resolution-independent at 15" so cleartype and other antialiasing doesn't bother me. I ran my desktop at 1900 though, so I'm probably not representative of most.

I think 1440x1050 at 14" is the perfect compromise between screen real estate, pixel size, and and laptop size. Most people who complain about text size at 1440x1050 get used to it, but some people just can't deal with 1600, which I can understand.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

Which stores have you been to? Yeah I know, most laptops in consumer stores are going to be widescreen. That's the new thing. But besides checking only the laptop screens, look at the normal free standing monitors too. Most of them are 4:3 like the Thinkpad screens, and you can find them with all kinds of sizes and resolutions.

I guess you could try Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City, Frys, and there are sure to be more local ones.

Good luck,

Brian

As I mentioned in my first note, I went to three of the stores you mentioned.
There's no Fry's near where I live.

I also checked the regular 15 inch LCDs/monitors to see if there was
any with higher res. But no luck!

Hmmm...well, the only other computer store that I can think of would be a Gateway outlet store, but they are sometimes hard to come by. I have one near where I live in Westchester County, NY. Other that that, I would suggest looking in your phonebook for some local electronic stores. Call them up and ask if they have what your looking for.

Small world! I live in Westchester too . I couldn't get the Gateway store information
from the gateway website (as all the stores are closing in April) or the
yellow pages. Can you give me its location? Thanks.

I believe the store is in Scarsdale on Central Avenue. I don't know the address off the top of my head. I'll see if I can get it for you tomorrow.
