Do T40's have line in jacks?

#1 Post by wrybread » Tue May 20, 2008 2:58 am

I just bought 5 T40s for my business, $240 each... I think its a great deal. They're not exactly loaded, only have 256 megs of RAM (god knows why they never upgraded them), and no internal wifi, but both issues are easily solvable with the miracle of ebay.

Anyway, they don't appear to have Line In jacks on the soundcards, just headphone out and microphone in. What's strange is the soundcard control panel does show Line In... So I'm wondering if there's some way to make the Microphone jack be line level?

Thanks for any help.

It's funny, I'm probably one of the few people to actually use Line In jacks, and it looks like I might have just gotten a bunch of laptops without them. Not the biggest deal if not, I've had great luck with Turtle Beach usb soundcards, which are all over ebay for $20.

They do, sort of. They're on any of the docks that work with the Tseries. This would be the Port Replicator II (cheapest, and usually with everything you need), Mini Dock II (overpriced PR II with a built-in USB hub), Thinkpad Advanced Dock II (has an extra docking bay, extra PC card slots, and a slot for a half-length PCI card. Needless to say, this is a big dock).

Note the PR I, Mini Dock I, TAD I, don't work with the T4x and R5x series because of the docking port location, they only work with T30s and earlier Thinkpads, however the "II" series have a sliding cover, allowing them to work with both the "I" series supported Thinkpads and the T4x and R5x Thinkpads with docking ports (the R50e and R51e don't have docking ports).

Also - if you need one without a dock - USB versions are available for $10-$20.

MiniDock, overpriced? Depends on your application. The USB ports (4) can be handy, as is the locking mechanism (key) which prevents opportunistic thievery. Might be wrong, but I think XP on my T43 recognized the dock and enabled the "undock" action, where as the Port Replicator is what used to be called a "dumb dock."

One of the reason the Minidock II costs more is that it comes with a power adapter. If you buy a second adapter to leave your port replicator plugged in - it costs just as much.

Maybe, but there are lots of used Thinkpad power bricks available at around $10. You'd be hard pressed to find a MiniDock power brick for $20.

If a powered hub matters, you could get an APC universal power adaptor with a USB power port and power a hub and the PR with that.

Depending on the APC model, you could also power your rig off a 12V battery and/or Solar.
