Improving Radeon 7500 Text Performance

#1 Post by fbp » Tue May 20, 2008 9:50 am

I noticed on my T40 (14.1" XGA), that the Radeon 7500 does not deal well with bold fonts, and sometimes even normal fonts (in Word, in PDF's, and in my web browser). Text is sometimes a bit blurry at the edges due to pixels half-on. Text is not even as sharp as my old 15" A22m....

Desktop font is sharp, its 'just' within the above applications that the problem exists.

Is there a way to fix this?

[note this is a different issue than my other post today about screen contrast]

I have a T41 with the same driver. I found that (a) you need Clear Type turned on; (b) you need the latest video driver; and (c) you need all the windows updates done.

Basically, the blurriness you speak of affected my T41 some time ago, but over time, this has corrected itself with success driver and windows updates. Very, very little fuzziness now.

Hi, don't forget that besides cleartype and video driver you need also to have your screen resolution set to same dimensions as your LCD display.
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

You were right to ask, however I am using the XGA screen's native resolution (1024 x 768).

I've seen this with Adobe PDF file at sizes other than 100% but never with Word files (?!). Did you try everything at 100% in the toolbars?

I believe it was at 100%. However, in my experience, even if it is not at 100%, the text should be clear. My desktop (Intel-based graphics) is able to scale Word to less than and greater than 100% (ie 75%, 125%) without any degradation in text sharpness, so I expect this from the Radeon 7500 also.

The problem is most pronounced with bold text, but it also exists to a smaller extent with plain text.
