Atheros 802.11 a/b/g vs Atheros Atheros 802.11 a/b/g II???
I finally bought a new T42P (2372-N37) which ships with an Intel b/g wireless card. I want to upgrade to the atheros chipset and would like to know if anyone has an opinion on the existing 802.11 a/b/g TriBand Mini-PCI (P/N #31P9701, FRU 91P7301) vs. the new 802.11 a/b/g TriBand Mini PCI II(P/N 73P4301, FRU 93P4262)? The new card is less expensive and I was wondering if it's worth it to get the first generation card for more money? Are there any benefits to either card? Thanks.

I have the old generation a/b/g card. So far, I love it, it always connects and stays connected. The only problems I have had have been network related and not card related. I have never used the new generation card so wouldn't know what to say about that, but you won't be dissappointed with the old one.
Hope this helps,
Gael

I too am wondering about this... After debating between a 2373-Q1U and -HVU, I settled on the HVU and a savings of $500.
However I just realized that the HVU comes with the first generation Atheros card.... Are there any bad implications about this? Does anybody know if the older card supports 108mbps? (I don't have any 108mbps gear, And I don't have any 11g gear either... But I'll hold off and get the 108 stuff if I know the laptop will support it...)
Thanks!

What model of the Atheros chip does each one use because one has the Extended Range if it's the 5004 family.

I just ordered one of the second generation minipci ones. It was $70 total from IBM with free second day shipping, can't beat that. Only snag is I have a T30 so I'll probably have to use the 1802 patch. Has anyone done this before? I also have a linksys WRT54G wtih the sveasoft firmware, which is great cuz it enables afterburner for free!
I too have the Linksys WRT54GS. I enabled channels 12 and 13 on my router and was able to take advantage of this on the 1st gen IBM WiFi card. However, the 2nd gen card can't seem to use the extended channels.
The best way to to protect your wireless network is by preventing others from evening communcating with your router. Not many WiFi cards can access channels 12 and 13 is the USA.

T42 2373-M1U 1.8GHz / 1G / 60G / IBM a/b/g II
Someone mentioned earlier that they have extended range. Reception's supposed to be pretty good. Plus they're only $70 shipped direct from IBM (that's 2nd day shipping too)Leon wrote:well, so far we know the new card can't do extended channels.... is there any ADVANTAGE to the second generation card?
In the tabook the new T43s either come with new Intel wireless chip or the IBM II chip with the AR5004X chip set.
