T43p - client security and hard drive access externally

#1 Post by jrcade » Thu May 22, 2008 11:31 am

My T43p is having some motherboard issues. Removed and tried to access the hard drive with an external USB drive reader. The drive shows up, but nothing can be accessed I'm guessing because of the fingerprint and password protection I originally setup (thru Client Security software) on the machine.

Is there a way to access my data on the hard drive externally while the computer is in the shop being repaired, given the password protection?

Thanks for any direction!

I'm no expert with the CSS, but it seems to me that if you're just using the recent versions (without the file-level protection), then its unlikely that it is CSS which is keeping your drive from being read. As I understand it, CSS no longer encrypts files itself. Did you have the privateguard software installed? Partitions encrypted by privateguard would surely not be readable with a removed drive.

Mostly, all I think CSS functions as now is a glorified password manager. I think it also makes it a little more difficult to log into a machine. I'd be surprised if CSS was the problem.
