Problem with video - Radeon7500 on Omega drivers

#1 Post by imperialist » Tue May 27, 2008 9:54 am

Hello ThinkPad users !

I'm having a hard time with my graphic recently. I use an external LCD display connected to my thinkpad through DVI in Replicator Port II.
This LCD has wsxga+ resolution so i can't drive it with orginal ATI software. Therefore I installed Omega Drivers 3.8.360, picked the right resolution, and everything seems to be ok but one thing, and that is video. When I play a movie - image is not smooth (its ragged like there is a filter missing or sth, you can see rows and columns of pixels creating the image). Besides, when i play it on full screen framerate drops from 29/25 to 20 (more or less, but it looks terrible)

So here is my question. What do I need to change and where, so I can watch movies again ? In Ati Tray Tools (in pack with omega drivers) i found section "video&colours" and there "video overlay" but the only thing you can change there is gamma, brightness ect.

Hope someone can help me :)
Best regards, imperialist.

Is the video hi-def or it is just a regular avi/mpg movie?

No difference, this affects all kinds of video.
What do you suggest if its only with HD, or only with regular ?

My suggestion would be try using a program like VLC or media player classic and see if there is any difference.

From: http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati.php
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Starting from Catalyst 6.6 and up, the following cards/chipsets (including Mobility) are no longer supported by the ATI or Omega Drivers:

Radeon 7k Series
Radeon 8k Series
Radeon 9k-9250 Series

For these cards please use the Omega Drivers v3.8.252 or older, thank you.
So what you're seeing now is software rendered video, which relies 100% of the CPU. The reason why the resolution of the video is bad is because of efficiency decisions. While it's possible to scale the image and do much more precise interpolation, it's a very hard task to do with the CPU alone.
The driver you tried to install did not install corectly at all, because it's incompatible.

Get 3.8.252 or older as soon as possible. :)

Yes !
After replacing drivers with an older version everything works flawlessly.
Thank you guys for help.
Troels, I owe you big time (I'm a movie addict) :)

I've also had an issue that with some movie files (can't recall if WMV or AVI), the screen will go black, forcing me to hard reboot. From browsing the T60 forum, my understanding is that this is an issue with the current driver release for FireGL cards. My suspicion is some video overlay wonkiness.

It would be nice if Omega Drivers would put out a new bugfix release.

Ouch, thats bad :/
I was just about to search for a T42p mobo, as a replacement for my T40 with Rad7500.
Looks like you've just cooled my rush a bit.
Tell me Tim M, are there any other problems with FireGL T2 comparing to 7500 (which works perfectly) ? I already know that its difficult to run OpenGL apps and games on omega drivers, but what else ?

Other question. While searching I found a T41p mobo (from what I know it should be same as T42p), but seller claims that there is a Radeon9200 on it. Is that possible ? And if it is, what about the performance of it against the Radeon7500 ?

Ok, everything is clear now.
Seller got that graphic card number wrong while creating the description of that mobo.
There is firegl t2, not r9200.

I bought it, hope it will work without any suprises :)

Cheers!

Nope. Everything else (including games) runs fine. I'm quite happy with the board; these issues are software and not hardware.

One thing to remember: the last 3 versions of IBM's version of ATI drivers there is NO OpenGL support. I asked IBM support several times, but did not get any answer.

The last version that supports OpenGL hardware acceleration was 1rd631ww, the following ones only have Microsoft OpenGL emulation, which is useless.

Pretty shabby drivers support.

Speaking of shabby driver support, which version are is being used successfully w/ WinXP and the FireGL T2-128 these days?

I need to do a wipe/refresh on the laptop soon.
