T42 vs T41 Noise Quirks?

#1 Post by james32904 » Tue Jun 01, 2004 8:30 pm

OK there's been discussion of T41 fan "throb" noise and also some static noise in the speakers at high volume I returned a T41 for these reasons, but really loved it otherise. I understand that the fan throb noise was fixed by use of a different fan in the T41p. Has this corrected design been carried over to the T42? Also, do any T42 owners notice the static noise in the speakers on high volume? I want to get a T42 or T41p but don't want these issues again. Thanks...

I have not noticed any fan throbbing on my T42p...actually, I do not think I have ever even heard[/] the fan except for half a second when I first hit the power button. I also hear no artifacts coming through the speakers...they are dead silent except when something should be coming out of them.

The only annoyance that I experienced was when I first got the machine: the hard drive constantly made this annoying "ticking" sound as the heads kept parking themselves. Modern hard drives agressively park their heads when not active (something less than 100ms I think). But Windows even when "idle" keeps accessing the drive about once per second. So I kept hearing this "tick.....tick......tick.....tick....." sound. But I found that even after a day of use the ticking started to get softer and softer and now I almost never notice it. I think it was the hard drive breaking itself in. The Hitachi drives actually park their heads by sliding them up a ramp...so maybe the heads managed to bend themselves slightly after repeated parking so that they no longer made as much noise? That's my theory anyway.

Other than that, I have absolutely no annoyances whatsoever!
