after XP SP3

#1 Post by sojourner » Sat May 31, 2008 1:48 pm

Noticed after a service pack upgrade a directory called ServicePackFiles is created under rootdir (windows). It is over .5GB, which space I can really use. Are the files in this directory EVER used?? After all, windows already has backup dll's and various other system critical backups, but what's this (ServicePackFiles), necessary?

These files are to be used should you need to revert back to service pack 2. (I have never needed to do that, since I always image my system when doing a major patch)

You may delete all contents of the ServicePackFiles folder but not the folder itself. (Sometimes Windows can get goofy if a special folder is removed) I don't know if XP will want to use that ServicePackFiles folder for later updates or patches, so it might be good to leave that folder there. It's a zero byte folder anyway, after you delete the sub folders within.

Since I have gone on to Vista, I have not gone back to check and see if anything gets added subsequently.

Actually $NtServicePackUninstall$ is the backup folder for reverting to SP2.

Servicepackfiles folder is used for
1. add or remove optional Windows components
2. repairing modified system files by Windows File Protection

If you delete Servicepackfiles, then Windows will ask for a SP3 install CD when looking for files for the 2 purposes stated above.

yes, deleting $NtServicePackUninstall$ is ok if you don't plan to stay with sp3. Don't delete the ServicePackFiles folder though.

Whats the RECENT / UPDATED consensus for Windows XP Service Pack 3 SP3 on the T43 series of laptops?

I'd like answers specific to the T43 only.

SP3 has a conflict with the video driver. Probably OK, unless like me you use an external monitor with the screen rotated through 90 degrees. (I use the external monitor to display some pages of text.) I had to revert to SP2 and wait until the driver is updated.

I've noticed that IE6 tends to freeze up several times a day, with the hourglass icon appearing within the IE window. The iexplorer.exe process has to be killed. This occurs on a T43 2687-D3U.

If I flush the DNS cache, it seems to help, though I don't know if there is any cause/effect relationship. I may have to migrate to IE7, though IE6 was working fine prior to SP3. I kept IE6 because it worked well with IE5 Web Accessories (with Zoom In/Zoom Out functions).

Although not specific to T43, several on the board (including me) have had problems with their wireless connection after upgrading. Some have had to revert to SP 2. In my case, somehow during the upgrade my router was changed from WPA2 to WEP and I couldn't connect. Once I changed the settings back in the router, I was fine. So far, I've not noticed any other problems although in light of a previous post, I'm going to hook my overhead up and make sure it's working alright. I just received this T43 and upgraded everything today. So far, once I sorted the wireless out, it's been fine.
