Strange audio problem with a T41

I just recently picked up T41. It's in immaculate condition in every respect except for one: I can't get sound out of it.

It does do system noises; beeps and such, but nothing else... not even Windows startup and shutdown. So far I've tried updating the drivers (Windows Update even replaced it), dumping the device from Device Manager and restarting, but so far no joy.

Anybody with any ideas?

I think there may be a problem with the driver, there are two members on the Lenovo forum who have the same problem here with R51 ThinkPads which use the same driver.

Any chance you have an older driver that you can roll back to?

Boot up a live Linux Disc. If sound works it's a driver problem. PC-Doctor also test sound IIRC.

No earlier drive to roll back to, but I'll give the Live Linux disk a try.

Well... it looks like a dead ADI sound chip. I tried running Ubuntu Live CD and .... no sound. I tried putting it in a port replicator and use the line out ..... no sound.

Too bad. Good luck with the repair. If it's for personal use and not resale, there are PCMCIA and USB sound solutions out there ...
