T42 Windows XP Software

#1 Post by chrisnyc » Thu Dec 16, 2004 8:03 pm

Are all currently shipping T42 models shipping with Windows XP SP 2 installed. Specifically the "older" models that have been out since May -- hopefully IBM is shipping everything with the latest operating system; I don't want to get a brand new notebook and have to do a big OS update.
Thanks for any information.

If you care about your machine, care about proper operation, and care about security, you should check every piece of IBM preload software and make any updates necessary. In addition, do all the Windows updates. No ThinkPad could possibly be new enough that it has Tuesday's new Windows security udpates. I don't wish to appear discouraging, but none of the half dozen different ThinkPads I have purchase in the last 2 years for myself or clients has been anywhere near current. ... JD Hurst

Thanks, itzmheck, I know there will always be patches and further updates, but glad to hear it had SP 2.

By the way, which model did you order ? ; and I hope you're enjoying it.

I'm leaning toward the 2373CYU, because I definitely want a 15" Flexview screen (considered the UXGA but am compromising on the SXGA+, which is the resolution I use anyone on my current UXGA non-Flexview screen, and the UXGA adds hundreds of dollars and also the upgraded video card which I know I don't need), and want an 80 GB hard drive, etc.

Thanks for your input.

P.S. Also thanks JDHurst ; I know that there are always security and other updates, which I always review, just wanted to be sure that SP2, which is an EXTENSIVE change to the operating system, will be there!

So, can we assume that it's safe to update XP to SP2 through Windows update, or does IBM have a specially patched version somewhere?

It is safe to get to SP2 via Windows Update - I have done that numerous times and it is successful. So far as I know, there is not a special IBM version of SP2. What IBM did have to do was re-issue most all of their drivers and applications to be SP2 compliant. So check out your IBM software for the latest updates. Again, I have done that as well. My machine (T41) is nearly a year old, has all the newest IBM and Microsoft Windows and Office 2003 updates and works exceedingly well.
