Nearly 84% of capacity after 2 years and 416 cycles is excellent.

Well done.

You have a Panasonic battery, which (i think) are the best.

I have a Sanyo battery in my T40, and it is nearly dead after 214 cycles (14.03Wh full capacity)

I think sony ones are the best, but after all the heat accidents seems like they stopped making those.

Mine is from mar 2005 9 cell, around 138 cycles only on it but still holds it entire % 77.76 Wh. I also dont charge it over 50% most of the time unless absolutely required ( like a long flight etc.) . Operate between 25-50% most of the time.

Have perfomed gauge reset many times, dont know if it is a problem with sony gauge but it has 77.76 wh from day one, has anyone else observed it with thier Sony Battery.

@ rssb: Very interesting information - thanks for sharing!

The reason for replying is this that I am currently looking for a (preferably genuine IBM-branded) both 6- and 9-cell battery for a T42, and I am quite confused because there are so many different FRU's - such as, to name "a few": 08K8196, 08K8197, 08K8198, 08K8199, 08K8201, 88P5628, 92P1012, 92P1013, 92P1061, 92P1063, 92P1065, 92P1068, 92P1069, 92P1072, 92P1073, 92P1076, 92P1077, 92P1102, 93P5003; some of which are discussed in the threads Best battery for a T41? and A complete list of T40 batteries and specs and T4X battery availability.

Because of being so confused :? about good and bad batteries and recommended and not-recommended shops, I'd like to ask you:

a) What P/N or FRU would you recommend if in the need for a (as always - of course! - no more expensive than necessary!) new or almost new, and preferably genuine IBM branded, both 6-cell and 9-cell battery for a T42? In the case of the 9-cell: Perhaps the 92P1073 you mention, and in the case of the 6-cell: Perhaps the 92P1091 which the OP is using? I think I would like to steer clear of all the no-name batteries such as "Battery for" this or that ThinkPad - sounds a bit too unspecific for my taste...

b) Would you recommend (always?) not charging your battery more than 50%, unless absolutely required ("like a long flight etc.")? Does this extend the battery life??

c) Would you recommend (always?) operate the battery between 25-50%, unless e.g. at travel with no A/C nearby?

d) Would you want to recommend any particular battery-shop (eBay or online)? I have seen pcsurplusonline.com and epartsbin mentioned but again - there are just so many shops and stores, so I'd very much simply like to rely on someone's recommendation! Shipping would only need to be to the USA.

Thanks very much in advance for any directly usable hints!

Best regards,

Johan

Hello Johan,
I have been very pleased with the 92P1073. Unfortunately it is not available anywhere new. The sanyo ones which I used seem to be degrading on the full charge capacity sooner than other. So the other best opition right now might be panasonic ones.

I have read in various places , for Li-ion batteries

1) Try to run them as cool as possible ( some people have suggested storing them freezeer when storing away for long time)
2) Dont charge them full, keep them at 50%
3) Dont drop them to very low charge levels

so I tried to incorporate these as best I can. When I am on battery I don't do any CPU intensive tasks, I run the brightness at 1 or 2. My CPU @ 600Mhz. So for the battery to fall from 50% to 25% it takes around 1.5 hrs ( with wireless, cpu 600mhz, web surfing, news reading, light word document editing, or IM programs).

At 100% charged, my battery last around 3.5 -3.7 hrs with dvd running continuously on a flight.

Other parts in my laptop are Atheros wireless and Hitachi 7200 PATA drives (2). It has decent power saving, I haven't noticed significant battery life difference between the so called "CENTRINO" laptops and mine. The Atheros card / Access connections have option of running them in low power.

Hope this helps in your decision making process.

Hey Johan, just to let you know. I had a Panasonic battery for my T42 and that thing only lost like .5wHrs per week or something. It was really good. I'd have to look up what the FRU was but i posted it a few times back i think. I got it from MDLeider or something :) The battery at the time was "new" as it had like 10 cycles and almost 98% new. When i sold the T42 with that same battery some months later it was about 96% of original capacity.

Side note - I noticed the Panasonic batteries also had a higher Design capacity than the Sony and Sanyo batteries. The latter were 47whrs while the Panasonic was 52 or something.

As you can see now i have a T60 with a Sanyo battery (42T5246) and it seems to be going down faster than i'd like it to. Granted it's original is 56.16Whrs and i have max of 55.05Whrs now so that's probaly still 98% or something but it lost .15wHrs after 2 cycles. It has a 40 cycles total so maybe overall that' still pretty good but we'll see how it works out. I only use it though once in a while as it's my long runner battery. I have the battery that came with this thing but it's down to 12wHrs so i just leave it plugged in when i'm using AC. That one went to 300cycles and i think it's Sony though.

Actually, from my experience, SANYO battery has better performance, don't judge from the figure, the actual performance that count :)

I have a Sanyo battery that is at about 75% of its original design capacity.

Full Charge Capacity: 39.30 Wh
Design Capacity: 51.84 Wh
Cycle Count: 97
First Used Date: 2005-10
Last Recondition: 2008-06-17

As you can see, I almost exclusively run my laptop from the AC adapter and have it set to charge the battery only when it drops below 75%. The "reconditioning" operation "recovered" maybe 5%-10% capacity, though it's more of a recalibration.
