Hitachi Travelstar 7200rpm, success!

#1 Post by vadarfone » Thu Jun 19, 2008 9:37 am

Hi,

New to the forum.

Just wanted to let you know that I have successfully installed a 7200rpm Hitachi Travelstar HD into my T42.

I read a load of stuff on this forum about problems, so I guess a lot of people find this difficult.

I tried using Norton Ghost at first, but it didn't copy the hidden IBM partition.

I used Acronis in the end, which gave a easy and clear options to copy all partitions of a drive, by way of Image.

I am typing this message using the T42, so it seems to work.

The only issue I have, is that it takes a long time after turning on, before I can do anything. Seems to be an error with the Desktop, in that if I click anything on it, the whole thing freezes for a number of minutes, before everything loads.

When it does load, it is all good.

So, if anyone can shed any light on this, that would be good

Thanks.

Wanting to swap the screens on these! Any ideas??

For the desktop, one thing to check might be desktop icons and caching. If you have a Japanese version of the OS, that may be a factor also. Some info here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/83383 ... icon-cache

Is that Hitachi a PATA drive, or a SATA drive? If it's PATA, many here will ask where you found one for sale? They're in very short supply. The drives. not the people asking where to fine them.

Yeah it is a Japanese OS. XP Pro.

How do I know if it is a PATA or SATA drive?

I could probably look it up on Lenovo's website, but this page shows two images. http://www.dbits.co.uk/html/laptop_hard_drive.html

The top one with more electrical contacts is PATA, the lower image with fewer contacts in SATA.

I'm pretty sure it's a PATA. I have a T42P and mine uses PATA. IIRC, the SATA started coming out in the T43 and onwards.

T42 definitely uses PATA in the main drive bay. So do T43/R52/X41, even though they have a SATA interface (they use a SATA-to-PATA bridge). SATA use began with the 60 series.

To the OP: did you clone the old drive or copy an image of it? Not sure what's causing your slow bootup but, in other threads here, those who've cloned their drives properly don't seem to mention that symptom.

Hey.

The Travelstar didn't come with my T42. I bought it about 3 years ago and it was sitting in my old Vaio.

I got a second hand IBM Thinkpad T42 (Pre-Lenovo), and wanted to upgrade to the Travelstar I had in my Vaio.

I formatted the travelstar using a USB drive caddy, then copied directly from the original drive that was in my Thinkpad (which coincedentally happened to be a Hitachi Travelstar 5400rpm).

I have been using it all day and it seems fine!
