T42 DVD Burner Useful?

#1 Post by Champ » Sat Dec 18, 2004 12:40 am

Anyone think this is worth about $200 American for this drive?
My only plus I can think of right now would be that it has a less chance of being taken and will be covered for damage (thro thinkprotect) as opposed to an external drive. I can't see the need for on the fly DVD burning all that often to tell you the truth.

i think yes, sometimes i borrow a series of vcd movie (mpg 1 format movie, not common in US) from my friend, i hate to put all movies in my hardisk so instead copy disc 1 to 1, you can copy 10 disk on one dvd. i also have a Lacie silm external 8x dvd+-rw i brought few months ago, much faster than the T series internal multiburner but i dont want to carry an external device around, so i think i am going to sell it.

but i think no matter external or internal you should get one

Look at the T42 FAQ, even though its in a state of getting worked on more everyday, the entry on this subject was the first one I did.

actually I downloaded your FAQ and I was looking but couldn't find. I found that there's no thrid party dvd burner and what to buy but not whether the dvd drive is worth the money.

Maybe I am just a little bit too stupid but from my point of view the answer to the initial question is rather simple:

If you NEED a DVD burner it will be useful. If you don't NEED it, it's not.

Do you have to copy DVDs on a regular basis and don't have a DVD-R burner at home?
Can't you backup your data via the onboard GbE?
Do you have to share data that does not fit on CD-Rs with customers?

If one of them matches to your regular use it may be useful for you to have a DVD-burner inside of your Laptop.

I backup with the GbE LAN to my server @Home. I NEVER copied a DVD. I do not even own a DVD! The DVD/CD-RW combo drive in my T42P is the first DVD-Rom I own.
If I have to do a complete backup I use my DLT-Streamers at home. 35GB per tape uncompressed and 70GB compressed is superior to any DVD-burner.
For me it was an easy decision when I orderen my T42p: No DVD burner because it was much too expensive.

Everyone has to answer the initial question for himself. Many people will answer "YES, of course! I NEED it!" But ask them why they need it and how often. If it is just for DVD-ripping (which is also illegal) it is a task that can be done at home with the normal PC and does not justify the extra $$$ for the burner in a Laptop. BTW: Is there anyone who does it regulary?

well I got gifted a hundred blank dvds so I do plan on buying a dvd burner. It's more of slimdrive vs. external. the slimdrive obviously being more slevet and attractive but very slow and more expensive.

how often I'll use it? I don't konw. Do I have a desktop I use reguarily? No. Tape back up? No. dvd movies copying? unlikely. Will I at least back up my pictures on it, yes. Will I back up my HD? Yes. Outlook file? yes.

I'm getting 30% off on the drive tho otherwise it'd be a no brainer of saying no. The other side if this drive was 8x it'd also be a easy decision of yes. Or if hte drive was aroudn $100 automatic yes.

I have the multiburner on my TP and I have only been burning CD's with it.....

so far ;)

It is cool being so small and all.... but it did jack up the price quite a bit!

For how much?

I decided NOT to get the multiburner since it seemed quite expensive when I don't really need DVD's on the fly. Seems like an external one is cheaper and can be multi layer as well as considerably faster.

that's the next thing on my list to get.....
