T42p screen 'ghosting' problem - is this common?

#1 Post by ozman » Sun Dec 19, 2004 4:00 am

Hi all - you may remember me - I posted about my first T42p about a week ago - the one that kept on droppping speed back to 600MHz, which we eventually discovered was a thermal issue and that my machine ran along at 86 degrees celcius !!!!!

Now - I received my second unit - fortunately this one's NOT overheating ..... BUT..... in the right upper corner of my screen, I seem to be getting 'ghosting' of the red pixels . It's as if the red pixels are REALLY slow to turn off, as they stay on for much longer than any other colour and are quite easily visible when i have changing images (which is most of the time). It is most prominent when there is something white one a dark background. This can be text or my mouse cursor for example. When the white image disappears, there are hundreds of little red pixels still visible there in the corner (in place of where that white 'image' was previously). Sure - they slowly fade away, but I feel this is not normal.....

The other thing i notice is that they can be gently 'massaged' away, being careful not to do any damage to the screen - the lightest touch seems to make them disappear.

I would love to know if this has been a problem with anyone elses thinkpads?? This is my second T42p and the second one with a problem.

I am hesitant to send this T42p back because I was unable to receive a replacement for my first T42p for 3 WEEKS !!!!! In the end I purchased this one and will have to wait for reimbursement for my first one in another 2 weeks time. !!! I just can't afford to do that again.

I would love to hear from ppl about whether they had ever noticed this issue, does it resolve with time, and any other suggestions regarding management. I will probably make a call to IBM sometime this week to express my disappointment at having spent an exorbitant amount of money to recieive 2 laptops that have both been somewhat faulty..... (Sure I might be picky, but I paid for quality)

I have a T42p 2373-GXG with 14" 1400*1050 display. No abnormal ghosting or staying red sub pixels in the corners.

I've got that problem here. It was pretty severe when the laptop was new, happening all along the top and bottom 1 inch of the screen. It occurred during transitions from a red or white screen or text to a black. The LCD had no dead/stuck pixels, so I decided to keep it for the tiem being. But after a month the problem either went away or subsided so that I don't see it anymore.

I've read about a few other people having the problem over the year I've been here, but it isn't clear if others have the problem but don't notice it.

UPDATE : I called IBM and I must say I was VERY happy with their service. They sent an onsite tech out to my house and brought a brand new replacement screen which he put in while he was here !!! I was totally stoked !!!

All was well - there was none of this issue with red pixel ghosting with transition from light to dark......... BUT ........... 2 weeks in now and IT'S STARTED IT AGAIN !!!!!!! As you might understand, I am totally frustrated.

Just wanting to know, who here has noted this problem before and (in your case) has it, or has it not disappeared. Also, can anyone else clue me in as to whether there is anything else that could be causing this problem. The funny thing is that this is exactly the same as the last monitor (except this is in the top left 1/4 of the screen). Finally, I understand there are a few screen manufacturers for the T42p - is there any way I can find out which one I have??

Thanks again for all your help guys !!!
