2373 J4U questions

#1 Post by cszy67 » Sun Dec 19, 2004 8:29 pm

Intro: just received my new IBM ThinkPad a few weeks ago and came upon this forum since then - lots of great info here!!!

1 - am I Bluetooth capable?

2 - Right now I am using the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG WLAN but I also have an Intel Pro/1000 MT Mobile Connection - what is that?

3 - What in the heck is "Intel Sebring API" and why is it taking 4,095 MBs!!! Seems like a ton of space taken up by one piece of software.

Thanks in advance for all your replies. As you can see I am pretty new to the ThinkPad stuff. I appreciate your patience and promise I am quick to learn.

If anyone has any additional comments regarding my system please feel free to post.

The following is the specification of your machine: P M 725, 256MB RAM, 30GB 4200rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint Reader, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro.

According to the description, the answer is:
1. Your machine is not bluetooth capable unless you buy a bluetooth PCMCIA or USB add on card...
2. Intel 802.11b/g is the wireless network card, while Intel Pro 1000 MT is the wired network card of your Thinkpad.
3. I think this 4xxx MB stuffs is the hidden recovery system in your Thinkpad. Once you wanna reinstall your Thinkpad, you can simply press the Access IBM button, and you will be instructed how to do...

Thanks for the details - I really appreciate it.

So, I guess at this point I should leave the "Intel Sebring API" software in there. Any pros/cons to removing this huge chunk of software?

Yes, can anyone comment on what exactly is the Intel Sebring API? (I suppose it contains the Centrino aspect of the notebook) But can it be taken out, or even partly? It's taking up over 4000MB.

That's weird that it's taking 4GB... It appears to be part of the wireless card drivers.

However, googling "intel sebring" gives something on IBM's site, that is a driver update. That says something about it keeping stuff from screwing up if you uninstall the Intel Sebring API.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50183 is the page.

It's the driver for the Intel 2200 BG wireless adapter (or perhaps other version of Intel wireless adapter). You'll need it if you use your built-in WIFI.

Note the following from the IBM Access Connections text file:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-IBM 11a/b/g Wireless CardBus Adapter cannot be used on
ThinkPads equipped with internal Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100
3B Mini PCI Adapter at the same time.
Please disable the internal wireless adapter using the
following steps:

1. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Click "Start", "Settings", then "Control Panel"
3. Click "Add or Remove Programs"
4. Click "Intel(R) Sebring API"

AMPLIFICATION:

Upon further research, I've concluded that while the above is true - it's apparantly true only for the version 8 driver supplied by IBM/Lenovo. When my laptop was spankin' new, I remembered seeing Intel Sebring in the 'Add or Remove Programs' of Windows XP as well as in the 'Software Installer' driver check.

Looking now, it's nowhere to be found (as in: installed on my T-42 laptop). I updated to the latest version 9.0.1.21 drivers for the Intel 2200 BG adapter, using the Lenovo Software Installer. Sebring is now no longer listed in 'Add or Remove Programs' or in 'Software Installer' driver check.

I conclude therefore, that you who see sebring installed with the Intel 2200 BG adapter - you must be using the older drivers.
