Little confused on docking stations for the T4x....

#1 Post by SaberX » Sat Jul 05, 2008 8:07 pm

Been looking on e-bay for a docking station for the girlfriends T41.
But see alot of diffrent listings for the docking station's.
Some list that all T's from the T20 up to the T43 will work.Along with all the A's,R's and X's.
Other listings say just for the T4x and R5x.Thease are for the same docking ststion.

I dont have the one i use with my A31P here now so i cant try that out.
But i'm looking for one for the T4x.
Other then e-bay , where is a good site to find out info on deffrent ststions quick?

EDIT: just found this site.Looking over it now to see whats the best one for me......

Yeah, for the T4x, you need the port replicator 2 or the mini dock 2 (they're basically the same - the mini dock 2 has 3 more USB ports and its own power supply to support them).

i too have been wondering about this but i found these three links on thinkwiki.org:

tp dock II
tp mini-dock
port replicator II

what i'm still not clear on is which one of these really supports DVI out for my T43. i say that because i recently had a weird experience with an IBM dock.

i don't have it here so i'm not sure on the part number/fru but not too long ago i picked up a port replicator II that came with a weird issue on the DVI port. basically, not only did it not work, it was missing the horizontal slot (i.e. it had all the little punctures, just not the slot) so it couldn't even receive the DVI plug. when i opened the plastic to allow the slotted tab to go into the receiving plug, it seemed like it was just a dummy plug. i don't think it was a fake because it came in an IBM box with instructions all in original packaging but i guess it could be.

anyhow, the question i'm trying to settle is whether a port replicator II offers DVI out on a T43 (with ATI graphics). according to thinkwiki.org, you'd think it would but then there's my port replicator with no real DVI-out. :??:

I've got the mini dock and it has a real DVI port. I picked it up for about $30.00 not too long ago.

When the battery moved to the rear starting with T40/R50, the dock connector moved closer to the front and new dock/port replicators were introduced. These models are:

Model 2877
Full dock with Ultrabay slot, PCI slot and two extra PCMCIA slots

Model 2878
Mini dock with 4 USB ports and a 120w A/C adapter

Replicator II
Without A/C adapter but uses the 72w adapter that comes with Thinkpads. Otherwise same as Model 2878.

These units support DVI-D (no analog). They don't support DVI-I (both analog and digital) or DVI-A (analog). So look for a DVI cable designated as DVI-D.

When seeking information - go to the source.
Here is a Lenovo link.

Hopefully the Lenovo info answered your question.

Note with both the Port Replicator II and Mini-Dock II, the DVI port is routed from the computer, through the docking connector. The dock does not “generate” the DVI interface.

This could be your problem – not all T4x series generate DVI output. Some models use the Intel integrated graphics processor, which only provided signals for the LCD and VGA connector. In the T43 series, these have the 18xx Type numbers, as opposed to the 26xx series which use ATI GPUs that do generate DVI output.

Next – there are several variations of the “DVI connector” some support digital and VGA analog in the same connector, and some support higher resolution by adding a second data channel. The connector types differ, depending on the variant. Look up DVI in Wikipedia for a good overview.

You can try www.ubid.com I bought one last week. The cost w/ shipping was around $33usd. It was a 62PN4551.My T42 has a problem with top usb port (broken) bottom ok
I also have a 74PN6734. Both work well with the T42 (23736YU) that I have. The 62pnxxxx has 4 usb ports while the 74PNxxxx only has one.
