Perhaps you'd be kind enough to let us know what you are smoking at the moment...(I'd like some too)

To be honest I did once see a similar thing - but that was after my 2nd bottle of Talisker...

Yep. The touchpad on my brand-spankin' new T42 (2378 DXU) is possessed. Sometimes it will open/select something if my finger is near the touchpad or hovering over it, but not actually touching it, or if I am moving the cursor across a selectable item. Other times there is no response at all even when touching the touchpad.

Because of those issues, in addition to others, I want to return the T42 to IBM. This morning I spent 45+ minutes on hold trying to get through to IBM's Returns Dept to get a RMA#. No human ever came on the line. Funny how they are very fast to answer the phone when calling the sales order dept. So much for IBM's reported stellar customer service.

The cursor jumps when two fingers touch the pad. This happens sometimes even when I would think that my finger was somewhere else, but after a visual check it actually was there, on the pad, next to its brother. Kind of creepy...

BTW, mine is homegrown

Seriously, I was almost flipping when the cursor jumped around, marking text when I was typing. This really sucked, since the marked text gets replaced. :x
This was until I found out that disabling the Press-to-select feature of the trackpoint might be a good idea...

Elhabash is right. Sometimes even it happens to me no with two fingers but one... then I noticed that my thumb was touching the pad in two areas at the same time... just correcting the habit solved the issue.

(By the way, besides this sensitivity this is the best touchpad I have seen in a laptop. And I did an RMA and did not have any problem at all. It took only some 5min or so.)
Ah, and I am that person who Ian was able to help once... (seriously, thanks Ian!)
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)
