The motherboard on my T42p (actually, the GPU) seems to be on its last legs (I was getting "fan error", so replaced the fan, and I guess that in the process I damaged the GPU connection to the motherboard). Is there a way to remove the HDD and access it as an external HDD from another computer? If yes, what kind of cable would I use?
TIA,
David
Accessing internal HDD from another computer
David, sorry to hear about the (possible) GPU problem. To answer your question:
Simply connect your existing HDD to the USB enclosure, attach the pigtail (double end) side of cable to two USB ports on another computer (a MUST to power-up most HDD's) then connect the other end of the cable (single end) to the enclosure. If using XP it should auto detect the drive, load needed drivers etc. Open explorer and look for your drive partition(s).
As far as how to remove the HDD:
Check out this link, it has loads of install/removal movies for various components for your TP
Lastly, regarding the GPU issue; it is a very disturbing problem which is all to frequent! There is a man who frequents this forum (resides in the USA) who can fix the GPU. A little research searching the forums will reveal his name. Perhaps you would consider having him fix your MOBO.
All the best!
I commonly use a USB HDD enclosure for PATA drives for backing up data, cloning a drive to be used in another T41, etc. They work great! All that's required is an IDE USB enclosure for 2.5" HDD's (examples) and whatever USB cable they provide. BTW, USB2 is very fast so a HDD gets copied/cloned very quickly. Is there a way to remove the HDD and access it as an external HDD from another computer? If yes, what kind of cable would I use?
