One of my T41s - I can press the power button, the power indicator will turn on - but then *nothing*happens. The screen stays black. No hard drive activity. etc. As long as I do not touch the laptop, it'll just stay like that. If I then press just to the right of the mouse pad, near the spacebar, the IBM bios splash screen will suddenly pop up, and the machine will boot normally and will be completely operational. This problem seems more likely to occur when the machine has been in use, and I've powered it off then back on. From a complete cold cold boot its "usually" ok.
Is this a typical symptom of the GPU soldering going bad (or starting to go bad) ?
T41 sometimes wont boot - is this GPU problem?

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to say "yes".
If you're brave and handy you can follow the sticky at the top of the T4x series forum that deals with re-flowing the solder...
If not, contact forum member jamiphar (James) who offers re-balling service with a warranty, and has done it for me on three ThinkPads to my complete satisfaction.
Good luck.

I wasn't sure if the GPU issue would prevent the machine from booting - which is why I wanted to ask. Thanks.
I've read the instructions, being brave is no issue. Its a question of comparing cost of buying the tools to do it (and the time) - vs paying someone else. From what I can tell I think they are about equal (?) - so if I'm only worried about 1 machine, its probably easier to have someone else do it who's experienced.
