Newbie T40 owner with an upgrade question...

#1 Post by raisindot » Tue Dec 21, 2004 9:17 am

My new T40 came with just a DVD ROM drive (no CD-RW).

How difficult would it be for a butter-fingered person such as myself to replace it with a DVD/CD-RW replacement? I'm a bit worried that I can't do any of the cool backup and ghosting stuff others around here are always talking about. Do these "slimbay" things allow for easy switching in and out of components or would I have do some serious mechanicry? Would additional BIOS or drivers be required?

Also, if this is relatively easy, does anyone know a good source for getting these drives cheap? Thanks in advance!

it is so easy, my technifobe grandmother can do it!

just pull the little lever just under the far right of the DVDROM drive, pull the plastic tab that pops out, and slide out your drive. then push the tab back in. to put the CDRW/DVD in, install any drivers you need (i'm not sure which, if any), then pop it into the slot. very much like a gigantic PCMCIA slot :P .

bplaut...all is very simple if the new drive already has the plastic bezel or frame attached to it. If it doesn't then you need a very small philips head screw driver to take it off and attach it to the new drive before inserting it into the empty bay. Also, no drivers are needed for CDRW or DVD-ROMs, or for that matter, even Multi-burners. You may need to set the Drive's specifications to UDMA if it is in PIO mode, especially if you're going to be burning discs. Do this by going into Device Manager and clicking on IDE Controllers and then clicking again on Secondary Drive. In one of the tabs on the window that opens, you'll find the settings I'm talking about.

Follow up..."bay protector"

#5 Post by raisindot » Fri Dec 24, 2004 9:17 am

Thanks for the info.

One follow up question: If I want to remove the drive entirely (since I won't use it that often), I'll want to protect the bay with something. I've heard there's some kind of bay protector out there. Does anyone know a name, model number, or anything I can use to search for them on the IBM site, Ebay, or whatever?

I've seen people who have "blanks" in their bays, but I think these came with them and so I don't know where to buy them. I too am looking for somethinig for the bay....an adapter for slimbay to ultrabay2000 (T40 series to T20 and 30 series, so I can use the 9.5mm multi-drive in my T30).

to anyone what wants to know I have a dvd/cd-rw drive for sale if you want to check that out in the for sale section

anyways I want a filler bay? whats the ibm part number? I'll try to get them to add it to my order. And technically what happens if your drive gets damaged outside your notebook? is it still covered by notebook warantee?

The blanks are available for $20 plus shipping. Look back on this forum for the vendor.
