Will pc2100 memory slow down on T42p?

#1 Post by miccocan » Wed Dec 22, 2004 2:55 am

hi
i just brought a pc2100 1GB on ebay for $64 UK, the original one i have is 512mb pc2700, so does that mean the 512 will slow down to 266mhz when use both?
will both 2100 and 2700 together cause unstability?

using a pc2700 on a pc2100 machine (ie, t40) is fine afaik, but the other way around, wouldnt recommend it tbh.

instability..? not sure, don't think so..

AKAIK the system will run at PC2100 speed..

I believe the RAm speed gets adjusted to the lowest speed RAM when two different speed RAMs are inserted. Please correct me if I wrong, but that's the way I understand it.

i got 2100 because it is so cheap, i dont mind if the performance decrease a bit (few percent), as long as it is working properly

The memory does run at the slowest clock. Just like anything, a system can only run as fast as its slowest component. Unless you got some super-funky PC2100, your system will effectively have 266MHz DDR RAM.
I ordered some Kingston 256MB PC2700 RAM on eBay and the seller accidentally sent me PC2100, which I didn't know until I put in the system. Even with 768MB total, the system seemed slower than with 1x512MB PC2700. Once I received the proper module (today actually), the system is faster than with just the 512MB and definitely faster than with the PC2100 RAM. IMO its not worth it, because the slower RAM will definitely bottle neck your system in any number of aspects.

The memory bus speed will drop down to 266 from 333 MHz. Whether you will notice any difference depends on the applications you run. Previous reviews have measured a 3-4% hit on performance (worst case).

In older systems, like the T2X series, the system wouldnt run at all with a slower memory module than what the system was intended for.

I don't think the T40 RAM speed is higher than 2100. The T41, and up are 2700, but I believe the T40 is locked at 2100. My T40p is 2100 in both slots...
