Ultra Bay CDRW/DVD ROM

#1 Post by nathan5603 » Fri Jul 18, 2008 2:31 pm

I have a T41 and the CDRW/DVD ROM drive only reads DVDs. Whenever I'm trying out a new distro of linux I always have to burn the ISOs on DVDs. That's about fifty cents a pop right now. Do you guys have any problems with your ultra bay drives? Do you have any suggestions on how I can fix this issue?
Thanks in advance,

Nathan

I have no problems with my ultra bay drives.

As you said, CDRW drives only burn CDs and only read DVDs.

You want to burn DVDs, get an ultra bay DVD multiburner.

What issue are you having?

Are you saying that the drive shouldn't read CDs? I have a friend that has a docking station with a built in CD drive. If I put my T41 on that dock station will I be able to boot an ISO from the docking station CD drive?

Of course it should read CDs. Can you put your CDRW/DVD drive in your friend's docking station and see whether it then reads CD? This helps determining whether it's the drive or some other software/hardware issue with your computer.

Clean your drive lens using isopropyl alcohol on a Q-Tip &/or upgrade the drive firmware

I very good friend of mine is letting me borrow his drive. It is working right now on my T41 and I'm running the product recovery discs now. I found an interesting site that covers Thinkpad laptops very well: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraBay_ ... ombo_Drive

Thanks for your help,

Nathan

I have noticed recently on my T43 with the UJ-822S drive I can only read audio CDs. Any other type of media (CD, CDR, DVD, DVDR etc) it thinks it's blank.

My bro in law has a T41 that I can try the drive in. Hope the drive is not broken but if so my Thinkpad is still covered for another 3 months under warranty.

PS. My drive is this one: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraBay_ ... urner_Plus

Well, an update - I got my drive replaced. Sitting in the repair center as I type this... They gave me a new drive, manufactured March 2008. made for T6x series but fits right in. Can read CD-ROMs now! Total time spent waiting at service center: 30 minutes

This is why my next laptop, and the one after that, and the one after that...etc etc... will be a Thinkpad :)

Lucky you!... the multiburners mad for the T6x are infinitely better than the ones for the T4x. Faster, more formats, and most importantly much more realiable because those solw T4x multiburners are also infamous for dvd burn errors.

I compared the specs between the two and saw that the T6x burner was faster. I didn't know about reliability issues b/c I hardly burned stuff with my T4x, but now that my desktop has busted, I'm on my Thinkpad full-time. (and to my surprise, I don't really miss my desktop one bit...) The new burner will surely get a workout..

The T6x burner has a grey button instead of blue, and a flat bezel instead of the tapered bottom edge. But it's hardly noticeable, so in the end it was a no-brainer!

Any chance of posting the FRU # for that drive?

I would like to be able to burn DVD's on my T42.

Thanks.

40Y8623 or 41N5643

But heat destroys laptops and because dvd burning generates a lot of heat in a confined area (especially in the poorly-ventilated T42), it's probably not a good idea to do a lot of dvd burning in there.

I appreciate the lookout but I will only be using it to burn .ISO files really. Everything else is backed up either across my network or onto one of my external hard drives.

Having the ability to burn the .ISO I downloaded instead of copying it to another machine would save me a lot of time.

Glad I found this thread in a search ... I have been burning FUJI DVD-RWs fine in my MultiBurner Plus that came with my T43 ... but this week started using some TDK DVD+RWs and got write errors 2 of the 5 I bought. I may have to send them back. FWIW, I use the drive in an UltraBay adapter in a Dock II, using a 2nd HDD in the laptop's UltraBay Slim bay (reading files from a USB 2 external HDD). Nice arrangement. Having some spare ULtraBay CDRW/DVD drives that our helpdesk was throwing out, I save the wear and tear on my "notorious" MultiBurner Plus.
