Network adapter disappeared from Device Mgr listing

#1 Post by nctalkinghead » Fri Jul 18, 2008 8:09 pm

My T42 had so much junk on it I decided that the prudent thing to do was wipe it all out and reinstall Win XP. I guess I was overly successful in that I wiped EVERYTHING off this sucker! I installed a fresh Win XP but now I cannot find my network adapter in the Device Mgr - so I have no internet access. It's an Intel 2200 mini PCI card that worked fine until I made my stupid move.

Any ideas on how to recover this? I do have the Win XP COA on the bottom of the TP, but I used another version in the reinstallation since I didn't have the original disks. The restore partition was already wiped by a previous owner.

Thanks for you help!

Find some other computer, download the driver for it from Lenovo, copy it to a USB key, and bring it to your T42 and install it. Should work. ... JDH

There are two adapters in your machine, wired and wireless. Normally it is easier to get the wired one working first, then install other drivers.

The T42 wired intel ethernet driver would be in this directory.

\driver\win\ethernet\PRO1000\winxp32

If you are unfamiliar with installing TP drivers; it is a two step process. First step will expand the driver package into a directory in c:\driver.... Then either a setup utility in that directory or the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard,

Install the Hotkey driver from Lenovo. Reboot. Hit Fn-F5 and turn on the wireless radio.

You should see the 2200bg on Device Manager, no matter if you haven't installed any driver yet, It could show as ethernet adapter with a yellow questionmark, Check in the BIOS if the wlan is enabled
Current

:). If the wireless radio is off it will not show up in device manager. Been there, done that ... Obviously the card could be bad too, but that's very unlikely on just an OS reinstall.

Yes, however I'm unexperienced in this, I never use the IBM software to control the ratios, if I press Fn+F5 on my machine a window appears saying I need to upgrade the wireless controller, however I'm using the latest Intel drivers from their page. So I think in any reinstall the card should be visible on Device Manager.
This laptops are better engineered than cheap Acer, once I couldn't get the wireless to go ON because some kind of software is needed to be installed, otherwise is useless, I have not had that bad experience on my T42p
