Troubleshooting slow boot up ...

#1 Post by ashleys » Wed Dec 22, 2004 3:08 pm

For those wishing to troubleshoot slow boot problems it may be worth reading the following KB article ...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316243/EN-US/

Once you've set the registry flag on then you get progress messages during your boot up (instead of the rather useless "Windows is starting up ..." message in the dialog box).
Any tasks that are started which take a long time should be pretty obvious.

The KB article is for W2K (and I can confirm it works on that) but I suspect the same registry change will work in XP.

Might be worth remembering there IS a Windows O/S bit here and that this is really for 'T' series related problems.

This said, I thank you for the post, and confirm it does work with XP - however it wasn't as useful as I'd hoped in my particular case as I seem to have an extremely fast startup - don't know what I did, but it only takes about 15 or 20 seconds from button push to action, via the password of course.
