is it possible to extract original XP w/SP2 on my new t42 ?

the instructions listed previously for copying the i386 directory simply don't work on machines that ship with SP2.

so, is there any way at all for me to do a clean install with the CD key for windows that I paid for when I bought my 1 week old T42?

i don't want those 15 or 20 IBM utilities running and clogging up my machine, and just uninstalling them doesn't work as well as doing a clean install.

will IBM ship me a CD if I ask them? or am I basically just completely out of luck?

I think you are out of luck. One time (T30, IIRC), the recovery asked for activation. I keyed in the license key on the bottom of the machine, but it did not work properly. I called IBM, and they said that the recovery CD's were bad and that a proper recovery will never ask for activation. I got new CD's and they worked fine. I very much doubt IBM will create a special set for you that must be activated.

I continue to wonder about the IBM tools clogging the machine. In my personal experience recently (T23, T30, T41), the Tools use no resources and are transparent in daily operation. The biggest of the bunch (Access Connections) is also the best if you have multiple connections. The power management utilities help battery management. My counsel would be to update the tools, set them up properly and forget them.

Contact the guy who wrote the Fresh XP Install Guide and ask him for help
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...

IMHO McAfee sucked for me so I use Symantec Corp 9.0 as my anti virus.

PC Doctor...well it takes up like a whole 2MB tops...so I was like ok leave it. And btw it helps when you wanna test for stuff like burnt pixels or "sleeping" pixels...it's 2mb keep it :)
