Thinking about a 7K60 Hitachi in a T22

#1 Post by Bob Collins » Thu Dec 23, 2004 9:54 am

While not really a T series question, I ask here with a two part question.

First, are there any issues to putting a 7K60 Hitachi into a T22?
Second, has anyone noticed that the 7K60 is quieter than the IBM factory drive in the T22?

I ask the second question as my T22 is very noisey from the HD and a friend's T21 is also very noisey from the HD. So much so that the 600X sounds positively silent in comparison.

I don't really need the additional space so much, but would like the bump in access response and a possible noise reduction. The noise thing is an issue for me as I was babied with my 701C and the 600X that the noise of the T22 makes we want to almost not use it. Imagine that. Otherwise for me the T22 is perfect.

Thanks
Bob

Bob,

The Fujitsu HDs are widely considered to be the most quiet, you might consider one if you don't need the capacity of a 7K60.

But, that said, I've had dozens of the 7K60s come through my place and have 9 in personal systems. I've never considered them to be anything but silent.

James

I know it's not a T22 but I'll tell you anyway - I put a 7K60 into my CWU and I think someone has pinched it 'cos I can't say I hear it AT ALL. I know it must be there, but it certainly can't ever be accused of being noisy - in terms of the 'bump in access response' - you'll get that and some - my unit boots in 20 seconds, password included...

I received a 7k60 as factory default but will have it replaced by a 80GB drive. For me the 7k60 drive is too loud. The notebook itself is virtual silent but the only thing I can hear is the fast spinning harddrive.
I really like the performance of that drive but having these slight vibrations nearly all the time on the right hand side with this noise is not what I expected ordering my T42p.
The 80GB 5400rpm is slower but I hope that it will be more silent, too.

From what you are saying, I can only think there are two kinds of 7K60 (or I've just gone deaf...)

Well, it's not really LOUD but it is the loudest part in my T42p...

I don't think that IBM usually puts E7K60s in T42Ps... I recieved the Notebook from IBM with that 7k60 harddrive. I did not change it myself.

Thank you all for such quick replies. I think that will be the next *THING* for the T22. I really like the machine, but the HD noise makes me nutty. It is now slated for a soonish upgrade.

Thanks
