Is $280 a good purchasing price for a t42?
Is $280 a good purchasing price for a t42?
I have been offered a t42 laptop for $280, and I have been looking to buy reasonably-priced ThinkPad for some time (I had a 770z, but it died last year)...
specs:
--1.7 Pentium M
--1 gig RAM
--40 gig HD
--WinXP Pro (new install)
--dvd-rom
--wifi
--battery holds full charge
--warranty until Dec 2008
--not sure about video card specs
--laptop bag (seller is just throwing it in as an extra)
Any opinions? I think it is a good price, but wanted to ask here.

Within about 20 bucks (over what I paid), that's pretty much identical to the T42 I'm typing this on, listed in my sig below. So I do think that's a good price.
And even though mine was a little cheaper, it has 512MB RAM, not a gig. So yours is even better, in that respect.

A good deal if that's what you're looking for in the respect of specs, such as LCD and GPU which is Radeon 7500 for XGA resolution in 90% of these machines...

It's a good price. The warranty protects in the event you have a major problem - mobo, display, hard disk.

Fair. I just bought a used T41 for $260 - with SXGA and a 1.6GHZ and 7200 RPM drive and though it was a good deal. Simple T40s and T41s with 1.3GHz CPUs 512M RAM, 30 or 40G drives and XGA can be picked up for $240 - but I haven't seen any decent T42s that low. They seem to be running $300-350.
(I realized this was not clear - I think this is a fair price as in a reasonable price to pay - I would do it at that price.)

Personally, if you like the machine, and it does what you need, I wouldn't haggle too much...$280 is not a bad deal...
My $0.02 only...

It's a good price.
I just picked up a new (to me) T42 2473-6YU unit today for $225 from craigslist. The unit is in near pristine condition and works great.
I think you got a good deal and the warranty is a plus.
Enjoy.

well... i'm gonna try to avoid it on my 92u. the 15" screen makes it awkward to carry around by the palmrest while open, even if i wanted to, which i don't.
my dad got the '43 with intel grfx.
