T42 cant burn CDRs?

Hi all,

Just got a new T42 2379-R9U. FIrst thing i tried to do was create the recovery discs, but quickly discovered none of my CDRs worked, borrowed my friends CDRs no luck, CDRWs worked fine though. WHenever I pop in a CDR and try the recovery program (or IBM RecordNow) the drive spins up and winds down 3 or 4 times, then the drive ejects and the app says "Please insert a blank or rewriteable CD into the drive".

ANyone else have this problem? THink this is a faulty drive?

I'd try to update the firmware but its a big PITA without a floppy drive...I even have an old ultrabay floppy from my previous thinkpad, but of course you need to boot from it and have access to the CDRW drive at the same time. sheesh.

call ibm so they can send you a new drive

yeah, sounds like a bad drive. You can try cleaning the lens with an appropriate CD/DVD lens cleaner disc, but ultimately when drives get like this, it usually means a bad drive. If you can return it, do it.

I'm having the same exact problem, but reversed, with a 2378-FVU. Memorex CD-Rs work fine, but Kingston Hypermedia (who?) CD-RWs that work fine in my desktop burner don't work at all (erasing or writing, with or without DLA enabled).

I'd rather not buy even more CR-RW media just to disprove my thought that the drive is bad, but will most likely have to since IBM techs are convinced its the media.

Are there any software settings that others have found to interfere with CD-RW operation?
