I have a T41P 2373 GEU that (after 3 motherboards on IBM warranty) is still performing flawlessly. I need a clone of this machine for my wife. We had a t40P and I switch HD's a few times and could get the other machine to boot but many incompatibilites (vide drivers and other). I am hoping that the more available 2373 GGU would be completely compatible with my 2373 GEU should I have to swap drives in an emergency?
Anyone have any data?
I figured another 2373 GEU would be a perfect fit on compatibility, but the specs on th 2373 GGU look exactly the same.
All help appreciated.
Thanks

As far as I can see, the only real issue that you would run into would be the video adapter which is the FireGL vs. the 7500 for the "run-of-the-mill" T40/41s. This issue would we resolved if you were able to find the 2373-GGU, which is pretty much identical to your other machine as far as I an see by just looking at the basic data on the Lenovo Support site. If you want more detailed information, then you should probably find the tabook and look up the details of that particular model.stratosurfer wrote:I have a T41P 2373 GEU that (after 3 motherboards on IBM warranty) is still performing flawlessly. From what I can find, it seems like the only difference between those 2 models is the MPCI WiFi card, where the GEU has an a/b/g (Atheros AR5001X+) and the GGU being a Centrino model that had the Intel 2100 "B" card.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)

The "B" card then is on channels A/B/G as well I suppose. I was a little confused by it's "B" Designation (B Channel only).
As well, would my software package on my 2373 GEU be compatible with that different wireless card?

Re: T41P 2373 GEU vs T41P GGU: What is the Difference?
OK, here's the deal on WiFi; what is commonly known as WiFi or wireless is actually known as 802.11 which is a IEEE standard that describes what channel it operates on and a bunch of other technical stuff. There's 802.11b (operates on 2.4ghz channel and maxes out a 11mps), 802.11g (same channel as b, but it's supposed to have a throughput of up to 54mps), and the 802.11a (which operates on 5.4ghz and generally not used by consumer products and it has a throughput of something like the g). Then there's the N standard which is brand new and has a MUCH higher throughput. There are others as well, but they are non-standard, such as SuperG (which is like G, but has a theoretical throughput of 108mps). In order for you to use that, you have to have an Atheros chipped card and WiFi access point with compatible chips.stratosurfer wrote: The "B" card then is on channels A/B/G as well I suppose. In your situation, the GGU machine has an Intel 2100 WiFi card in the MPCI slot which is a "b" standard card so will only run at the 11mps speed. It's part of the "Centrino" technology package/marketing strategy where, a machine had an Intel Pentium M CPU, Intel chipset, and Intel WiFi card austensibly to have multiple benefits, one of which as low power consumption and consequently longer battery life.
Many of the forum members have replaced those older/slower 2100 cards with something faster and more powerful such as the Intel 2200 or an Atheros card. Unfortunately, IBM began putting a "whitelist" in their BIOS that reports an error when an unauthorized card has been put in a ThinkPad. You can just ESC out of that, but most folks use a commonly available piece of software know as the No 1802 Hack to get rid of it permanently when they put in a newer/faster card.
Hope that clears things up. How's the weather down in "the Heart of Texas"?
