Matshita UJDA745 no longer recognized on T40

Happy holidays!

Need help please with my T40.... after installing the included software for my new Ipod Mini (christmas gift) , my UJDA745 no longer appears in my computer. Consequently, I can't mount/read any cd's or dvd

In the device manager, it is listed as enabled by with a yellow exclaimation point signifing a problem with recognition... it gives error in the properties for the drive

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

same thing for the AXV CD/DVDrom SCSI Cdrom device ...which I'm honestly not sure what that even is..

I've tried uninstalling and redetecting but no luck... a lengthy search of the net has been fruitless... can't seem to find any driver on IBM or other sites to try and update with new/different drivers
I tried pointing the update drivers to the windows/system and system32 directories and some subdirectories within those but windows can't find the drivers
