IBM a/b/g Atheros in T42p and Linksys WRT55AG or WRT54GS ?

#1 Post by pointfielder » Sat Dec 25, 2004 3:46 pm

Hi All,
I am waiting for my 2373KXU (T42p) to arrive. :D It has the IBM
a/b/g Atheros AR5001X+ chipset. I have pretty much narrowed down the
wireless router choice to the Linksys family: WRT55AG or WRT54GS.

Two questions:
1) Which of these routers is better for home usage? I don't know if I will
need the 802.11a capability at home.
2) Regarding the WRT54GS (with super boost), will I be able to
harness the super boost with the IBM a/b/g card using the latest atheros
drivers that enable super G modes? The discussions on this topic have
not been clear about this.

Thanks!
Ravi

nope. can't use the speed booster technology with the Atheros chip.

Just get the WRT54GS. It's great for modifying the firmware. Get the 802.11a if you have lots of interference.

Just to let you guys know that the newer IBM a/b/g II WiFi has support for SuperG when using IBM's drivers.
hi ssdaytona,

i wanted to confirm, based upon your above mentioned note in response to
a similar thread at: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=4840,
that if i upgrade my mini PCI card to the II generation one i can get a
transfer rate above 54 Mbps on my T42p with wrt54gs router.
anything special i would need to do while/after replacing the card? is it
fairly straightforward?

thanks,
ravi

You can only get SuperG with hardware (router and card) that both use the same chipset. Linksys wifi routers use Broadcom chipsets, and the IBM card uses the Atheros chipset, so you won't get SuperG to work with that combination.
