xp license, no CD
Hi.
I hope someone can help. I have a T42 thinkpad that I recently had to replace the hard drive. I have the restore disks, but no cd for Windows XP. I put in the restore disks, but they didn't restore the windows os. How can I get XP on to the new hard drive without a CD? I have the legal right to the xp operating system (the COA sticker is on the bottom of my laptop), just not the CD. Thanks.

I have the 6 recovery CDs, and already installed them on my computer, but the computer stays in the rescue and recovery mode, even after rebooting. When the computer first starts (no cds in drive) it goes right to rescue and recovery and windows never boots up.Harryc wrote:I can mail you a copy of the T42 recovery CD's. Send me a PM if you're interested.
I guess you may find help in the thread T42 Windows XP Pro Reinstall - see the post of Fri Apr 25, 2008 4:05 pm (linked from the thread T42 - Why is this happening after Rescue and Recovery). Let's know if this trick solves your problem?

Thank you sooooo much! It worked!!!!! Just one more question. Can the T42 recovery CDs be used for a T40 or even a T30?Johan wrote:I guess you may find help in the thread T42 Windows XP Pro Reinstall - see the post of Fri Apr 25, 2008 4:05 pm (linked from the thread T42 - Why is this happening after Rescue and Recovery). Yes, your T42 R&R media can also be used on a T40 - but I don't know about the T30... someone more knowledgeable will have to reply to this (Harry, are you still with us here?). The reason why I hesitate is that T4x's uses Pentium-M CPU's with the Intel 855PM chipset, while the T30 uses Pentium-4 Mobile with the Intel 845MP chipset, so I would expect that the T4x drives won't work on a T30...
Hang on for a while, and the answer will shop up - here! Happy computing with your new harddisk - remember to make a backup!

You're not kidding this is "the coolest, most helpful, friendliest, fastest-response site on the internet!" Do you by chance know where/how I can get a set of restore disks for a T30?Harryc wrote:Johan, I've never tried T42 R&R discs on a T30 machine. I have used X31 discs on a T4X machine though. Those are both Pentium M machines.
Yes, I know this works (or rather T42 R&R's on a X31 and apparently also the opposite!) - as explained in the thread Anybody got the Recovery Disks for X40 ?? (see the posts of Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:32 pm and Sat Jun 21, 2008 6:23 pm) - but the explanation is (or seems to be!) that X31's and X40's and T4x's are using "practically" the same chipset... which is different from that used in the T30.Harryc wrote:Johan, I've never tried T42 R&R discs on a T30 machine. @ newsofparadise: If no one reply to this question here in the T4x sub-forum, try ask in the T2x/T3x forum... someone there will now! Because... as already said... you've finally come to the right place!!
