T42p not recognizing external Acer FP551 LCD monitor

I'm trying to hook up an Acer LCD as an external monitor for my T42p running XP SP2. I have the installation CD for the monitor, but XP is not willing to accept any of the files on the CD as drivers -- I tried the "update drivers" option, I tried "install new hardware", but no go. The problem is that when the T42p is hooked up to this monitor the display quality is poor -- fuzzy and shaky. I have the latest video driver updates. The monitor has no DVI option. When I use this same monitor with my T20 the display quality is excellent. Any suggestions?
