Easy to upgrade T40/41 to 802.11g?

#1 Post by umdenken » Mon Dec 27, 2004 2:39 pm

Hi,

It occurred to me that doing this upgrade would simply mean getting a new mini-PCI card and throwing it in. Is this right? Any experiences doing this?

Thanks,
Robb

yep, its about that easy. Just make you you use an ibm card and not a third party one. Get the driver from the web and your good to go.

Or, actually, an Intel card since I want to stay Centrino...

Actually, it must the the IBM b/g card using Intels b/g chipset. A generic Intel card won't work with Thinkpads without BIOS hacks.

I would also like to upgrade the internal card from B to G in my T40. Where can I buy the new card?

You will also need to update the BIOS and the Embedded Controller to use the newer cards with the T40.

I have a T41 2373 with an internal 802.11b, and I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to upgrade it to an IBM 11a/b/g wireless lan mini PCI adapter II. Is it generally true that faster g speeds are only available when transferring files from computer to computer? Though you do get better range as well. (throughout the house...even onto the sidewalk...onto the middle of the road... :-0 )

I use my wifi and router to split dsl connection. (occasional file transfers) So maybe it might be worthwhile...hmm. Right now, I'm not too sure which would be best.

IBM 11 a/b/g wireless lan mini PCI adapter II ($65) or the
Intel Pro/Wireless Mini-PCI Adapter from IBM. ($59, I think it was)

If I do get one of the above, I'll probably sell off my brand new Linksys wrt54G notebook network adapter card. So if anyone's interested... let me know. (might even try auctioning it @ eBay)

G Range generally better. Internet throughput will NOT likely be faster UNLESS your connection is faster than 4.5Mbs (the nominal speed limit of B).

Also, note, you will get NO speed incrase from a G connection if even one B connection is made simultaneously with the router.
