Is Lenovo# 02K6699 correct AC adapter for T41?

#1 Post by vwbmw » Wed Aug 13, 2008 6:59 pm

I guess I need help composing a Search of the Marketplace Forum: I wanted to find a reliable (Forum?) seller of the correct new or used AC adapter for a T41 TP, but I get 1700 misc threads to wade through.

I also can't read the correct P/N or volts/amps specs off my T41 because it is far away in Boston with a non-tech family member who needs to take it overseas in 2 weeks ..but now it won't consistently recharge or run on AC power. A generic repair shop says the DC jack is OK, and although my adapter voltage seems OK, the TP wouldn't run w/o battery with my AC charger, but does with the shop's AC adapter. But shop wants $90! to order an adapter.

eBay has cheap 'TP T4x' adapters, but I can't tell which are reliable. Lenovo's Parts store shows 02K6699 ($39) as the correct (and only) P/N for all T20-T43, R/A/X series too. Can that be correct?

In any case, assuming the diagnosis is true, whatever I order needs to be correct because the ex-USA travel means there's not time to re-order.

The T41 will take any 72 watt (16V 4.5A) IBM AC adapter that has a yellow tip, regardless of part number or FRU (there are many of them). As there are several knock-off versions floating around eBay, you have to look closely at the picture(s) or wording of the auction if you want to stick with genuine IBM adapters. Most such power supplies will have "For IBM" or "Replacement for IBM" labels on them, be missing the IBM tri-color logo or will have "non-OEM" in the description.

72 watt IBM adapters can be found on eBay from about $15 (shipped). As you are in somewhat of a time crunch, here's a sample of random Buy-it-Now listings: (I have no ties to any of these sellers)

Also, since your family member will be traveling overseas, a plug adapter will probably be needed as well. This changes the U.S. standard two-prong plug into one which fits the wall outlets of the country (s)he is in. The IBM supplies can automatically handle 100VAC to 240VAC input so you shouldn't have to worry about that issue. However, make sure that your relative does NOT try using that plug adapter on any other electrical gear unless they are absolutely sure it can handle the voltage coming out of the wall.

@vwbmw...
a number of different fru #s will work as Ray says. i've used 4 different, real ibm 72w adapters in all of my 't' models and my a31p over the years.

that said, i've got an ibm 02k6699 sitting here right in front of me... works perfectly. it's yours, if you want it, for $20 shipped usps priority. paypal is fine.

just let me know. for reference, i've had great dealings here with ajkula66, underclocker, Brad, richk, dorronto, virge and others.

rkawakami, thanks for the thorough response and eBay links to genuine (used) IBM adapters.

sarbin, thanks for the offer of a (lightly used?) 02k6699; I'll let you know tomorrow, after the T41 gets retrieved from the 1-man Boston diagnostic shop. (I'm not confident the shop guy is correct, but something's only sporadically giving or receiving AC power.)

...a couple days ago, I tried scrolling through the Memberlist hoping to find a Forum member in/near Cambridge MA (where my T41 now is), someone experienced who might properly recognize the 'AC power' problem: adapter? jack? mobo? (or who'd know someone local who can)

I'm in Boston and I have a few extra 72W Thinkpad adapters. If your family member wants to meet me somewhere, they can have one for $15. I have a lot of different part numbers, but I know they all work with T4x laptops. I'd be willing to verify that your (their) power adapter doesn't work and that this one does. I'm not a multimeter expert, so I don't know how much help diagnostically I could be other than just swapping power adapters and maybe batteries. Repair wise could could resolder a power plug or replace a motherboard...

Oh, and I am one man, but I don't have a shop...
