T43 Motherboard replacement causes sound not to work

#1 Post by colorado2dogs » Fri Aug 15, 2008 6:51 am

IBM recently replaced my motherboard (twice) because of a problem with video memory. Coincidently, after the replacement, my sound no longer works, either from the headphone jack or internal speakers. I can't listen to a CD, nor can I play standard windows XP sounds through the speakers. I am running XP pro and after hours on the phone with IBM and trying all of the standard stuff, their answer is to wipe the harddrive and start over. I have reloaded the SoundMax drivers from the IBM site, checked all the settings, and have had little luck and am not looking forward to the issues associated wtih reloading. It does seem as though the application, and XP for that matter, thinks things are working great. Any ideas?

welcome to the forum.

did you call ibm about the sound issue after receiving your machine back?

one simple thing comes to mind...
maybe the speaker assembly-to-planar connector wasn't reattached properly, has come loose or is damaged. depending on your model number, have a look at the hardware maintenance manual links below.

^ Would a loose speaker connection affect both the speakers and the headphone jack? I would think the headphone jack would still function.

I would suggest checking the mobo's 100% OK, by downloading PC Doctor diagnostics, and burning onto a CD as an .iso.

Since the audio signal is cut off when you plug in speakers or headphone it is possible the audio signal to the internal speakers goes through the headphone jack. So a loose connector could kill sound to both.

You could try removing all RAM and seeing if the machine beeps on start up. That will rule in/out hardware issues. If it does not beep then it is a planar board issue. Otherwise it is a software issue.

T43 sound issue

#8 Post by pathma » Fri Aug 22, 2008 3:24 am

I've lost sound twice, and IBM claim they replaced the
motherboard. Now I have a worse problem, just a short while
after they changed the motherboard, and now am out of warranty.
IBM won't oblige at this point. The boot sometimes stop after the
Thinkpad logo before the CMOS messages come up. I suspect a
keyboard or someother connector.

Seems like the sound problem might have been due to too much
flexing of the thinkpad, I carry mine a lot. I've stopped carrying it
with one hand now to prevent flex. Also, when they serviced it, I
noticed some missing screw. THe new thinkpads have a stiffer
case, probably because of all these problems. So to the user with
the sound problem the prognosis is not good. Time to be
philosophical and take very good care so you don't have other
problems like I do. Don't flex the beast.... good luck!
