core2duo - pentium m?

#1 Post by ircr » Sun Aug 17, 2008 9:08 am

Is it possible to replace my T41's Pentium 1700 MHz processor with R60's Core2Duo 1,66?

Nope. It can only take faster Pentium Ms, specifically 400 fsb ones.

Huh....is it normal that my T41 is so slow?! When I watch a concert or a movie and use firefox it lags my cpu. Is it possible that my graphic card ati9000 32mb slows everything?! I have 1,5GB ram.

You probably either:

1) Have it in "low CPU" mode (600MHz).
2) Have too much other crap running

My daughter uses a 1.7GHz T41, Radeon 9000 with 1.5Gb RAM and it does just fine streaming video, playing DVDs, etc.

The fastest CPU you can install in that machine is a 2.1GHz Dothan Pentium M. You can also upgrade your machine to a maximum of 2GB of DDR333 / DDR400 RAM. The second memory slot is underneath your keyboard. Finally installing a 7200RPM hard drive or one of the newer 160GB+ (and larger) 5400RPM drives will also help speed up the system. Your 32MB GPU is just fine for online stuff.

You should post more details of your computer including the 7 digit model number from the bottom of the laptop (XXXX-XXX) and your OS. Tell us what you are trying to do with the machine and we can help you out.

No T4x series laptop can take a Core2Duo CPU. For some reason this is a common question when it should not be.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.

ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U
IBM Thinkpad X61T, T61, T43, X41T, T60, T41P, T42, T410, X301

the very confusing "centrino" branding is to blame, in my opinion. people seem to think that any "centrino" cpu goes in any "centrino" laptop... if people actually knew that "centrino" refers to a very specific set of cpu/chipset/wifi, this wouldn't be a problem.

example: (correct me if i'm wrong, this is just off the top of my head)
dothan(pentium-m)/i915(gma900)/intel2915abg(mini pci) - sonoma centrino
yonah(coreduo)/i945(gma950)/intel3945abg(mini pci-e) - napa centrino
merom(core2duo)/i965(gma3100)/intel4965abgn(mini pci-e) - santa rosa centrino

believe me, if it was possible to stick a core2 in the pentium-m's socket, you would know about it, and you wouldn't have to ask because everyone would be doing it.

edit:
was the following combo also considered centrino?
banias/i855/intel2200bg - the original centrino?

I think the original Centrino might have been with the Intel 2100 WiFi card.
