T42 always getting 'stuck'

#1 Post by newsofparadise » Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:24 pm

Hi. I first wanted to say how great this forum is! And thanks so much for all your free information and advice! I have a recent problem with my T42 (XP, 512ram, 1.7ghz). I'm not sure when it started, but I am having a problem with my computer getting 'stuck' especially when I am on the internet--sometimes I have to wait over a minute with the hour glass stationary just to scroll down a page. The other problem is when I restart the computer to 'fix' this problem, it takes forever for the computer to shut down (reloading is not too bad)--and I always get three windows that pop up before the computer closes down. The first one is something like QCTray, the second one is GettingStartedform and the last one which always takes the longest is rundll32.exe. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Sounds like is a good time to do a Windows reinstall. Do you have the Recovery Disks?

is qctray part of access connections? if you don't use acc-conn you might try uninstalling it and see what happens. for the record, i don't use it and it's the first thing i remove on recovery installs.

My computer just had a fresh reinstall before I bought it in January. I do have recovery disks, but if I do a Windows reinstall will I lose all of my stuff like files, programs, favorites, etc?

I don't use access connections either, but how can I uninstall it?

As others speculated, QCTray is related to Access Connections and can safely be disabled if, as you say, you are not using it. One wonders if the whole problem is Access Connections messing up your Internet connection, running unneeded tasks and services.

Access ibm isn't in my add/remove programs. In my add/remove programs for IBM programs I have:
access ibm tools
ibm 32-bit sdk for java 2 v1.4.1
ibm hard drive protection system
ibm record now
ibm track point accessibility feature
thinkpad full screen magnifier
thinkpad integrated 56k modem
thinkpad power management driver
thinkpad ultranav driver

Or maybe there is another program that 'houses' the ibm access connections? Or possibly is there another way to rid the computer of this program? Thanks.

If your computer is properly set up, it is unlikely that Access Connections would cause the problem you are describing. I have it working well myself and also on client computers. Of course, by all means uninstall it if you do not use it.

Now, for a T4x, you should be able to find Software Installer (no longer supported). If you can find it and run it, then SI will allow you to uninstall Access Connections. Assuming that works, per my first paragraphs, uninstalling it may not solve your issue.

@newsofparadise...

add/remove was where i've always seen it and where i've uninstalled it. jdhurst's suggestion re: software installer would have been my next suggestion, but as he stated, the package is no longer 'officially' available or supported.
