Hitachi DVD-ROM Drive GDR-8083N

My DVD ROM drive is playing up It appears in my computer and I can eject it from within windows XP but I cannot get it to eject using the button on the drive itself.

If I put a disc into the drive windows does not see it.

Any pearls of wisdom from all you knowlegable people? Is the drive just toast?

Reseat the drive, then run the PC-Doctor Optical drive tests. If those tests fail, then yes it is most likely 'toast'.
