DVD multiburner on T42...

#1 Post by pointfielder » Wed Dec 29, 2004 1:17 am

Hi All,
I know that the DVD multiburner that comes with many T models can
WRITE DVDs in only -R and -RW formats. What DVD formats can it READ:
only -R and -RW or a few others as well?
Thanks.

It's hard to tell from what panasonic says:
http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/com ... UJ-812.pdf
But I can tell you from my experience that it does read "+" format discs that I burn with book setting (also known as bit typing) to DVD-ROM without any issue.

according to Nero InfoTool, the Matshita (madshitter :-) ) drive in my T42p CANNOT read DVD+ formats. This is with the recent firmware update too.

That's interesting...just went to IBM's site:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... &loc=en_US
According to this, the drive can only write the - format and RAM, but can read pretty [censored] much anything.

Thats weird, but i take yours and IBMs word for it. Would you be able to run the Nero Info Tool program and see if it reports +r/rw reading support.

Thanks

No second-gen multiburner?

#11 Post by NathanA » Thu Dec 30, 2004 1:07 am

The UJ-812 is the drive used in the Q1U? Isn't that the same drive that is in the KXU and friends?

I thought someone said something about a "second generation" multiburner in the Q1U, but it would appear that this isn't the case...I just checked the Panasonic site, and the UJ-812 is the only 9.5mm multiburner model they make.

Once and for all....the UJ-812 is the only slim-line (9.5mm) multi-burner there is in the world, that we know of. When we say multi-burner, we mean DVD and CD, not necessarily + and - DVD formats....which a "true" multi-burner should be able to write to, IMHO....but one thing positive about the 812- it will burn DVD-RAM!

I'm sure that this is true after searching around myself for other options, but what I was referring to is the post to this thread:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=4897

...which states that one of the differences between the KXU and the Q1U is that the Q1U "has the 'second-generation' multiburner" (post by user 'kjarrett').

I was asking if anyone could prove or disprove this statement. My research indicates that the KXU and Q1U have the exact same drive with no differences.

KJ was mistaken, they all share the same UJ-812 Panasonic multi-burner.

KJ was possibly confusing the "old" 16X CD burner vs. the "new" 24X CD burner.
