Horrible HD ticking.

#1 Post by JHelgie » Wed Dec 29, 2004 9:07 am

The HD in my thinkpad died, and I have received a replacement drive. The problem is that occassionally the new HD will begin ticking very loudly, at a rate of 6-10 times per second. It might go for 5 minutes if nothing is done, but sometimes only does it for a few seconds, however once it begins doing it, it will do it enough that the only thing I can do is turn off the system, remove the drive and put it back in, which usually stops the ticking for a few hours. I have used tweakUI to stop the windows optimization when idle, and I am quite certain this is not normal operational sound. Any ideas on what to do? I'd really like to not have to send 2 harddrives back in 1 week.

I can't tell you what the sound is, but when I called IBM service about mine, the guy there said "Back it up, NOW!" and sent me a new drive.
