Error 0199 issue...

#1 Post by fiyota » Wed Aug 27, 2008 8:51 pm

I know this has been discussed before and I have searched on the topic. But I still have a question that I cannot find the answer to.

So here it goes!

I recently tried the ThinkVantage Security Solutions program and tried to activate the security chip. Of course it asked me for the supervisor password, which I happily entered what I thought I had set. Nope, turns out it wasnt't, I tried what the previous owner might have set, which was also wrong.

Anyways, it locked me out and rebooted, leaving me with the error 0199. I can bypass this error by pressing esc, but it is a royal pain in the butt!

I read about the anti-hammering delay that is built into these systems, and was wondering if this error will dissapear over time, or is the anti-hammering just when you enter passwords?

I am unable to enter the bios in supervisor mode, so if the error message won't go away with time, how can I remove the error?

I don't need to access the bios at all for any other reason, other than to follow the directions to remove the error message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, since having to press escape every time i boot or come out of hibernation is a royal pain!

sorry you're having trouble.

your best bet is to get the prior owner to provide the svp, since threads discussing methods of password circumvention/workarounds are frowned upon here. it's forum policy.

good luck.

Well, not really looking to figure out the password....

All I was wondering was if this error message will stop being displayed? or will it continue to come up at boot if I don't enter the password at some point?

Thanks!

does this sound similar to your symptoms: http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/mess ... d.id=14408

i believe that the only way to clear the message is to clear the sec chip. i'm pretty sure that the only legitimate way to do that is via the bios. supplying the svp, when set, is the only way to get at the option to clear the chip. so... you're left with getting it from the prior owner.

:) Great success!

I was able to get a hold of the previous owner and got the supervisor password! All is well in the thinkpad camp.
