Bluetooth keeps dying

#1 Post by xxPaulCPxx » Wed Aug 27, 2008 10:13 pm

I installed the bluetooth daughtercard in my system. After checking in here, I learned I needed to do the Fn + F5 to turn it on. I picked up the Kensington Slimblade Trackball mouse and I LOVE IT (can't wait to use it on the plane!).

My only problem is that periodicly the bluetooth system seems to die. I get an error on the screen that says "USB device not recognised" - it pops up over and over again. While this is happening, the Bluetooth hardware has disappeared from my device list. The errors go away when I Fn + F5 and turn bluetooth off... and reappear again when I turn it back on again. Rebooting will bring it back again.

EDIT: The "USB device not recognised" error usually starts when I come out of standby, but it can also happen other times too.

Any ideas?

Just some quick thoughts (and at this late hour of the night, not necessarily in order) :

- assuming your OS is XP go to device manager, USB controller, USB root hub, find device which draws 90-100ma current (might even say it's for BT), turn off power management
(when PC puts BT in power save mode BT may be acting funny on you coming back to power, so turn PM off)

- Have you checked device manager to see if MS BT has installed? If it is there uninstall it and rename \windows\inf\bth.inf to bth.inf.MS-Bluetooth
(there could be a conflict between IBM BT and MS BT, renaming prevents MS BT from reinstalling itself)

- The BT CDC is recognised by the system as a USB device ... your problem sounds intermittent, did you install the card? Irregardless, may want to remove and reinsert the card (there may be bad contact), make sure all electrical connectors are removed and reinserted (again, may have bad contact), also be sure screws holding card are snugged.

- if none of the easy stuff works try COMPLETELY uninstalling the BT software and reinstalling after a 'clean' boot' (use MSCONFIG)

- there is a remote possiblity the card itself is bad

Let us know how you make out!

FYI - Thank you for all the info, I'm going through the fixes slowly to see what works. I'll post back on my success and failure - Much gratitude!
