probably and old topic revisited-t42 and firewire cards

#1 Post by keith5523 » Thu Aug 28, 2008 11:46 am

Will my 2378 machine accept firewire 800 or only the 400 mps? I have a desktop machine I use for photo processing but occasionally have the need to process with the T42. The files are RAW files and are usually 20 mb files and I often have 200-300 photos at a time to process with Adobe Lightroom. I usually offlload the files from the camera CF card directly to an external hard drive where they reside. I'm trying to speed up the transfer process from the CF card to the USB External drive. Any suggestions will be appreciated...as usual.

Thanks,

I'm confused. You don't have a firewire port. Are you talking about adding one on a PC card? Do you have a card? (which one?) or are you looking for one?

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough. In my original post, I explained what I was trying to accomplish, and asked for suggestions on how best to achieve that. I'm trying to speed up the transfer process from the CF card to the USB External drive. Any suggestions will be appreciated...as usual.

I do not have a card. If I were to buy one, will the 2378 operate with a Firewire 800 or 1394b or does it need the Firewire 400.

Will Firewire 400 perform noticeably faster than the USB 2.0 for the job I've mentioned of downloading photos from CF to USB drive?

Maybe I've asked a question that just doesn't make sense, and if I have, I apologize for my lack of understanding.

Yes, you can get any PCMCIA Firewire card you want, regardless of whether it's 400 or 800.

If I understand your question, you are looking for the best way to transfer around 6 gig of big files off a CF card onto a USB hard drive.

I think your best bet it to get a CF card adapter - the PC CARD/PCMCIA type I style adapter... they cost less than $20 online. This will allow you to pull files off the cards via the PCMCIA slot and dish themback out again using the USB interface. I believe the max bandwidth ofthe PCMCIA/PC Card bus is about 1.3GB per second... but you will be limited more my the memory cards themselves and the USB drive.

The PCMCIA to CF card adapter adds the least amount of complexity, and should maximise throughput.

PS. I have one of those adapters, as I thought my wifes Honda Civic (radio) took a CF card... nope, it took a Type I PCMCIA card. Thus, I had to get the adapter.
