Warranty Expiring soon what should i get done?

#1 Post by wantathinkpad » Fri Aug 29, 2008 1:31 pm

Hey my 3 year accidental warranty is expiring very soon. What should I get repaired or replaced before I go on my own? I wanted to extend the accidental warranty for another two years but they said can't be extended only the regular warranty can. Fair enough I guess.

With that said what I get replaced or have them look over to see if it needs repair. I know I could use a new keyboard and maybe get the screen plastic repaired. Not necessarily needed but.... this thing will probably last me another 3 years would be nice if can I have the newest parts of certain things so it will last as long as possible.

A quick comment: If nothing is wrong with your ThinkPad, then I can't quite see how/why anything should be replaced? If, on the other hand, something is damaged or seriously worn - parts which are covered under warranty (say, the keyboard, the UltraNav or the CCFL - the latter making the LCD more dim compared to when new, or having large grey spots along the sides or in the corners), then this/these parts ought to be subject for replacement under warranty - but how you obtain having a still-functional part replaced by a new part, that I don't know? I would assume that if by calling EZServ and speaking to someone experienced, and describing this or that "very worn part", then this person may perhaps agree/authorize that the part shall be replaced.

With respect to extending the warranty (incl. the accidental coverage) beyond the three years, then I "think" it ought to be possible - see for yourself page 12 of the Lenovo TopSeller Web Guide - August 2008 where I believe the Lenovo P/N 41C9341 would extend your warranty for another year to be depot-service (EZServ) and including "ThinkPad Accident Protection Service" (also for the additional one year). If you in stead want to extend the warranty for two more years, but without the accidental coverage, then you will need the P/N 41C9180 which can be found for around $152 - see the threads Advice on extending warranty and Warranty extension for Thinkpads (found by seraching this forum for "warranty extension" and checking "Search for all words").

In my experience, the issue of warranty and extending warranty is surrounded by a lot of confusion within lenovo... try ask the same question to different employees/sellers, and then compare the answers you receive...

Screen hinges - if they are loose, you can have them tightened/replaced. I did that on the last day of my warranty period. :)

I had EZ-Serve (non-accident) coverage expiring recently. They allowed me to add accidental coverage to mine, even tho I had no such coverage previously. Maybe it depends on the model, I dunno.
