Hi all,
Just sharing what happened to me recently, it might interest you, who knows ?
I've just bought a T42p for tasks like word processing, coding, internet, etc., so not very demanding tasks in fact.
Yesterday, in an attempt to have more information about my battery, I installed Lenovo Battery Maximizer. It turned out that there was no information about the cycle charge in the battery.
Anyway, i played a little bit with the power schemes in Battery Maximiser before uninstalling it.
A few moment later, I noticed that the fan was always on. This was the first time I noticed the fan, as my T42p used to be relatively quiet before. I was wondering what went wrong and started looking on the internet. I ended up installing TPFanControl. Of course that partially solved my problem but that did not explained why the fan was so loud in BIOS mode.
Well, it was Battery Maximiser (or me, if you prefer) that messed up everything in the power settings. In case you are using Battery Maximiser with maximum performance settings, chances are that Intel Speedstep is disabled and that the CPU is always running at full speed, making the BIOS set a high fan speed.
What I did was just to reset the windows power settings (Control Panel/Power Options) to Laptop, set TPFanControl to BIOS mode and observed that the CPU temperature immediately went from 61°C to a more reasonnable 45°C.
At that temperature, TPFanControl with its default settings shuts the fan off (is it safe ?) whereas the BIOS sets something around 2900 RPM.
So everything is just fine now but I'm keeping TPFanControl, it's a great program.

Gérard
